Honey I’m Home

kitchen design decorating

We all aspire to have a house that not only feels like a home but also reflects our personality. Regardless of the style or period of interior you like, at the end of the day it’s all about finding the right balance.

I remember as a teen in the 80’s constantly rearranging my bedroom to reflect my changing mood (darn puberty!). No matter how much I tried I knew I would forever be clashing with the remnants of 70’s wallpaper and carpet that my parents were so proud of back in the day…I still can’t find any Pantone reference to some of the colours that graced our walls, thankfully long hidden.

Thinking myself a budding interior designer – oh come on you’ve all thought yourselves one at some stage – I remember that break of independence, the first flat, saving all my pennies so I could create an interior that reflected ME. Something that I would be proud to show-off to family and friends – a tad bare at first as it took forever to save up for ‘the’ next piece. Countless hours spent in second hand stores or markets looking for cheap objects to complement my look. Then one day I stopped, looked around and realised I had created my very own second hand store, with the exception that I lived in this one!

Over the years we’ve done them all; classic, modern, retro, country living, bachelor, oriental, art deco (actually I lie, never done art deco)…and a few we would care not to remember. And as you get older and settle down (naturally not a pre-requisite) you have hopefully worked out who you are and have a fair idea of what you’re looking for in a home, creating an environment that is not only safe but fun, relaxing and something to entertain and share with your friends and family…after all, your home will be there to greet you each morning and evening.

So getting back to balance. You don’t have to be qualified in interior design* to plan and execute the look and feel you’re after. Don’t be afraid to mix and match pieces (try not just creating one of the clichés), start with some neutral pieces and colours, then, by adding accent items, you can transfer a room and bring out its, and your, personality. And if your house has original build features, try and incorporate them also as after all you must have liked them when you first fell in love with the house so no point forgetting about them now!

Getting it right takes time! And as our good friends tell us, even when you think you’ve finished you will undoubtedly find something else to change. And it is with this that we let our friends beautiful home into yours. “I feel we’ve created a combination of glamour and homeliness here. Our aim was to retain the integrity of the 19th-century architecture, while opening the house up and adding some modern, luxurious touches” says Abi.

And what about accessories…“That’s what’s so great about adding lively accents to a home. You can easily change the scheme if you get bored.”

Looking for inspiration or some ideas to steal? Then here’s a few to whet the appetite.

*Sorry Wikipedia but the human activities comment made us laugh: Interior design describes a group of various yet related projects that involve turning an interior space into an effective setting for the range of human activities that are to take place there.
