Berners Tavern Bliss

Berners Tavern London interior

We have realised we’ve been to Berners Tavern twice now and have not said a word about it – shame on us. It’s absolutely brilliant!

Berners Tavern is the restaurant in The London Edition that opened in 2013, the first in a new luxury range of hotels from the Marriott Group, breathing new life into the former ‘Berners Hotel’. The property was originally built as a group of townhouses in 1835 and became a hotel in 1908 – famous for its grade II listed richly decorated ceilings in its marble-clad lobby and restaurant, which have been lovingly restored by its new owners. The restaurant that is Berners Tavern features walled framed pictures, a floor to ceiling bar, stunning overhead antique lighting with the marble ceiling dimly lit to create a uber luxurious dining atmosphere. “We needed to draw the eye down, we couldn’t have everyone sitting looking up at the ceiling” we were told by management.

The hotel and restaurant are receiving rave reviews and are naturally attracting the rich and famous (including Elldrew – not that rich or famous but…!). Our first dining experience saw us enjoying a lovely 3-course à la Carte lunch menu, which ended with a few more tipples in the members bar, aptly named ‘Punch Room’ as you can order a punch bowl of deliciousness from a selection of eight flavoured punches (we don’t know how many we sampled but apparently we were sitting near a wizardly famous actor and a young Princess from the Royal Family…the circles we keep indeed).

Our last visit was a more civilised joint birthday lunch with family who regaled of the days when they used to visit the original hotel for Sunday lunch, the booth seating where we were sitting had taken over the original positioning of the bain-marie and carvery. This time we managed to grab a couple of pics to share, so taking a look at the menu, we enjoyed the signature starter dish of “Egg, Ham and Peas’ – deep fried duck egg with mushy peas and crispy ham. Also consumed were the middle white pork and pistachio pate served with pear and saffron chutney and toasted sourdough, and a huge but refreshing ice berg lettuce, avocado and blue cheese salad with a garlic and yoghurt dressing. Naturally as it was a Sunday we all partook in the roast rib of Ruby Red beef that came with all the trimmings, and each of the three birthday boys received a complementary chocolate mousse dessert, with our own candle! Boy, did we roll out of that restaurant!

Amazing service, stunning venue, quality food and model-esque staff makes for a fantastic dining experience. With a waiting list that can be up to 3 months (prime weekend booking timeslots of course) we recommend you get a date in the diary ASAP. We are already planning our next visit so we might bump into you!

    1. Fab, hopefully you will love it as much as we do. It’s up there with The Worseley and Ivy (relaxed upmarket dining experience, not pretensious at all which we loved). Mention it’s your anniversary, you have to get a free pudding 🙂
